Grid Painting in Acrylic
Workshop with Zoya Scholis, Saturday, August 6th, 2022, 10:30AM-3PM
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Work on as many as 3 paintings in one day using palette knife and brushes. Grid painting is a method of Minimalism that uses repetition to create design, rhythm and interest. Most of the day will be spent painting intertwined with color theory and demonstration of technique, with time to reflect and share at the end. Class size is limited to nine participants. MATERIALS
Acrylic Paints:
Any red, yellow & blue I’ve listed what I use in parenthesis
Red (Cadmium Red Medium and Alizarin Crimson)
Blue (Ultramarine Blue and Cerulean Blue)
Yellow (Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow Medium)
White
Black
Raw Sienna
1 bottle Acrylic glaze medium (matt or gloss)
Substrates: 2-3 canvases, size16x20 to 30x30
Brushes: Synthetic brushes are fine for acrylics and are generally less expensive and easier to care for than natural hair brushes such as sable. If you already have watercolor or oil brushes of the same size use them.
3-Large Flats: small medium & large (house painting brushes and cheap brushes work fine for this technique
Palette Knives: 1”, 3” and 4” putty knives (found at hardware stores)
Other: cleanable palette spray bottle, medium sized water jar, plenty of rags, apron, snack, drinking water, latex gloves, straight edge, stencils, scissors, painters tape

10:30-10:45 Intro/set up/overview
10:45-11 Demo: Prepare substrates - dark, light, & neutral
11-11:45 Dry time: stretches/Game
11:45-12:45 Demo taping and layers technique
•Wet & dry with brush & knife
•Review: analogous colors & complimentary colors
Students start “gridding”
12:45-1:20 LUNCH
1:25-1:35 Individualized Critique options
1:35-2:15 Going back in, starting anew, staining or glazing
2:45-3:00 Clean-up and Students Share
