Palette Knife Painting Saturday, April 1st from 10-2:30 COURSE DECRIPTION Painting with a palette knife is a great way to loosen up your practice. In this workshop we will use three different approaches to your choice of subject. All require simplification and spontaneity. Palette knives, like brushes come different sizes and shapes. Henri Matisse inspired Mixed Media Sat., June 10th from 10AM to 2:30PM Course Description Henri Matisse (1869-1954) has long been recognized as one of the greatest painters of the 20th century. In 1941 Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and, following surgery, he started using a wheelchair. The last fourteen years of his life, with the help of his assistants, Lydia Delectorskaya and Monique Bourgeois, he was able to sustain his creative output. His cutouts are among the most admired and influential works of Matisse's entire career. With their aid Matisse set about creating cut paper collages, often on an enormous scale, called gouaches découpés. Matisse was a descendent of generations of weavers. He knew how to use pins and paper patterns, and he was supremely confident with scissors. He called it “painting with scissors”. Emphasizing flat forms and decorative patters we’ll learn to make simple compositions with movement and mood. Franz Kline Abstract Expressionism Sat. July 1st from10 to 2:30 COURSE DECRIPTION
Franz Kline (1910 to1962) was an American Abstract expressionist. The paintings from his Hot Jazz series we originally based on random shadow shapes, but Kline also carefully rendered many of his most complex pictures from extensive studies, commonly created on telephone book pages. In this workshop, by using a putty knife and large house painting brushes we’ll be forced to execute with looser and more simplified strokes. We’ll also work out basic compositions ahead of time, increasing our odds for success. Best of all, we’ll have great fun as we paint freely and learn to see the possibilities in minimal strokes.
